The project “Supporting Afghan Media and Journalists to Promote Basic Rights and Freedoms” is funded by Counterpart International. It aims to build the capacity of local media managers and journalists, who are currently facing numerous financial and technical challenges. This project has brought together all stakeholders to support local media and provide a safe environment for journalists to access information and report safely. Under this project, 45 media managers and journalists were trained in basic journalism and safety journalism, media communication, and marketing. The significant challenges faced by local media and journalists included improving knowledge of fundamental aspects of journalism, producing professional media reports, and conducting interviews. Based on the needs assessment results, engaging and effective training materials were developed to create an appealing training workshop. The main objective of this training was to enhance the capacity of these journalists by providing them with the necessary tools, knowledge, and skills to deliver sociocultural and political media reports professionally and effectively.
The HRWMO has been hosting networking sessions for media managers, journalists, and other stakeholders. During these sessions, participants have stressed the importance of providing additional training for professional journalists, as many have left the country. Despite this, they have highlighted the fact that the local media remains vibrant and committed to an open and pluralist society. Concerns have been raised about the lack of support potentially compromising the media’s sustainability. Participants have strongly recommended the implementation of training programs, which are currently non-existent. HRWMO has been supporting the local press since 2010, offering public awareness, media advocacy, reporting, and capacity-building programs, and has been working closely with media in all 34 provinces. Urgent capacity-building training is required for media in all provinces, and professional trainers and organizations can facilitate this. HRWMO is an expert media entity registered with the Ministry of Information and Culture, dedicated to empowering and supporting Afghan media across the country.
